Reports from Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan reveal a devastating incident that occurred on Saturday morning, resulting in the loss of at least 20 lives. The boat, carrying 25 passengers, tragically sank while crossing a river in Mohmand Dara district.

The victims, which included women and children, faced a harrowing fate as the boat succumbed to the river's waters. According to local residents, only five individuals managed to survive the ordeal, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of five bodies, comprising of a man, a woman, two boys, and a girl. The Nangarhar health department swiftly responded by dispatching a medical team and ambulances to the area, aiming to provide assistance and support in the aftermath of the tragedy.

As the search and rescue efforts continue, the cause of the accident remains undisclosed. The lack of clarity surrounding the incident has left many questions unanswered, with officials focusing on locating any remaining bodies to ensure a comprehensive response to the disaster.

It is noted that the residents of the region heavily rely on locally crafted boats for transportation between villages and local markets. This reliance, while common, underscores the risks associated with such modes of travel, especially in areas prone to natural hazards.

The community mourns the loss of those who perished in this unfortunate event, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures and precautions to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The repercussions of this incident serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritizing safety in all endeavors.
