Boat crashes into Gateshead's Millennium Bridge leaving onlookers 'shocked'

Onlookers were left "shocked" after a boat crashed into Gateshead's Millennium Bridge over the weekend.

The boat veered towards Gateshead Millennium Bridge on Saturday before making contact with it. The top of the boat scraped underneath the bridge causing a significant bit of damage to the vessel.

Gateshead Council has since confirmed that the boat had lost power and control and drifted under the north side of the bridge. While the top of the boat scraped underneath the bridge, the bridge itself was not damaged.

Thankfully no one was hurt during this incident, but onlookers described it as "shocking" to see and said it was like "something out of a movie".

A spokesperson for Gateshead Council said: "A boat lost power and control on Saturday and drifted under the north side of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. The top of the boat scraped underneath the bridge.

"The structure of the bridge has been inspected and is not harmed, but the boat suffered some significant damage. Nobody was injured in this incident."
