Boat Capsizes In Congo, 22 Dead Fleeing Rebels

Police investigate a boat following an accident on Danube river, near Komarom

In a tragic incident, a boat carrying individuals escaping the rebel advance in eastern Congo capsized, resulting in the loss of 22 lives. The boat was en route from Vitshumbi to Virunga National Park when the accident occurred. The majority of the victims were fleeing the ongoing advance of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. While eight individuals managed to survive the ordeal, the cause of the boat capsizing remains unknown.

M23, the prominent rebel group in the region, is one of many armed factions competing for control of eastern Congo's valuable mineral resources. With support from approximately 4,000 Rwandan troops, the rebels have made significant territorial gains, including the recent capture of Bukavu, a city rich in gold and coltan.

Despite their military activities, analysts suggest that the rebels are also pursuing political power. This was evident when the rebel-appointed mayor of Goma announced plans for a census, indicating their intention to govern the city. Ferry services between Goma and Bukavu have resumed, offering a vital link between the two locations.

Due to the conflict and insecurity in the region, many people have resorted to unsafe means of transportation, such as overcrowded boats on Lake Edward. The ban on ferry services since last year has led to the proliferation of illegal and hazardous boat operations, resulting in numerous fatalities.

Tragically, overloaded boats capsizing has become a common occurrence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as individuals opt for risky water travel over dangerous land routes plagued by violent clashes between security forces and rebel groups.
