BMW of North America is recalling more than 394,000 cars due to concerns over airbag inflators that could explode, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency warns that an explosion could lead to sharp metal fragments striking the driver and passengers, potentially causing injury or even death. The affected vehicles include certain 2006-2012 Series Sportswagon, 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan, and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan models. Service centers will assess and replace the airbag module if deemed necessary, with owner notifications scheduled to be sent out on August 23, 2024.
In a separate incident, NHTSA initiated an investigation into 94,000 recalled Jeep Wrangler vehicles. Chrysler had previously recalled over 280,000 vehicles in March due to a manufacturing defect in the right and left airbag inflators, which could rupture and release sharp metal fragments, posing a risk of injury or fatality to occupants. The recall impacted specific 2018-2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 models, according to the NHTSA.
