BMW driver in 'serious' condition after car crashes and sets on fire on M6

A man is in a serious condition after a BMW crashed and set on fire on the M6.

Emergency services received a call just after 5.10pm on Tuesday, February 14, reporting a crash on the M6 between junctions 28 (M58) and junction 27 (Wigan). Emergency services including police, fire, ambulance and National Highways, arrived at the scene a short time later and found a BMW had crashed into the motorway's central reservation.

The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene. An air ambulance from Manchester landed a short time later before flying back to base.

The fire service said once they arrived they tackled a fire in the boot of the vehicle before leaving the scene 45 minutes later. Police have said one person is being treated for serious injuries.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm emergency services are dealing with a serious RTC on the M6 this evening, Tuesday 14 February. At around 5.10pm, Air Ambulance, NWMPG and Merseyside Police officers were called to Junction 26 northbound (Orrell) to reports of a single vehicle RTC, involving a BMW in collision with the central reservation.

"The male driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The M6 remains closed northbound between Junction 26 and Junction 27 (Gathurst) while an investigation is underway. This is likely to be closed until around 8pm."

Any information on the crash should be sent to the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit on (0151) 777 5747, email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk, or DM @MerPolCC on Twitter quoting reference 823.
