Blyth Valley constituency General Election results 2017: Full standings, MP and reaction

The information below is Blyth Valley's General Election results from 2017. For the General Election 2019 results, .

Blyth Valley has remained firmly red as Labour holds onto the seat.

Stalwart Ronnie Campbell, who has held the post since June of 1987, was once again victorious with 23,770 votes.

Conservative candidate Ian Levy received 15,855 votes, Liberal Democrat Jeff Reid 1,947 and Green Party Dawn Furness 918.

There had been doubts over whether Mr Campbell would contest the seat as he had to undergo chemotherapy last year to treat stomach cancer.

But cheers filled Blyth Sports Centre as the defiant former miner was announced victorious in his seventh election.

“It is a great feeling, I’m happy to get a good majority and we can build on that,” Mr Campbell said.

“Last year I thought I wouldn’t be on this earth by Christmas so it means even more. I fought cancer, I’ve beaten it and we are now looking forward.”

Lib Dem Jeff Reid said he was disappointed that the party fell from 2,265 votes in 2015 to 1,947 two years later.

“It is a shame that we are going back to two party politics,” he said.

“Nationally, it just goes to show that the Conservatives have thrown away their advantage and they deserve it.”

Turnout in Blyth Valley was 67.1% - 42,490 votes.

Which parties and MPs have held the seat in the past?

This has long been a Labour seat which until recent years always boasted a strong Lib Dem turn out.

However at the last election the Lib Dem vote collapsed while there was a strong UKIP performance. This time round there is no UKIP candidate giving the Tories a free run.

There was talk that Ronnie Campbell, Blyth Valley MP since 1987, might not contest the seat as he had to undergo chemotherapy last year to treat stomach cancer but he’s up for the fight again.

Theoretically if all UKIP votes switch to the Tories it could be close but we suspect there’s too much ground to make up and it should be a Labour hold.
