Bluey creators release edited version of controversial episode labelled fat shaming

The makers of the hit TV show Bluey have removed a scene from a recent episode following criticism that it was fat shaming and didn't promote body positivity for children.

The opening scene of 'Exercise' initially featured dad Bandit in the bathroom weighing himself on the scales and sighing in disappointment, as well as grabbing his midriff.

When Bluey asked him what was wrong, Bandit replied, "I just need to do some exercise".

Mum Chilli also weighed herself and was disappointed with the results.

The scene has now been removed and the episode starts with Bandit heading outside for some exercise.

An ABC Statement said the episode had been republished "following a decision by the makers".

"The new version provides families with the opportunity to manage important conversations in their own way. As the home of Bluey, the ABC supports the decision to re-edit the program and we have updated the episode on our platforms," it said.

The statement added that the BBC will also use the edited version for global distribution.

Perth-based paediatric dietitian Dr Kyla Smith was a leading critic of the episode when it was released three weeks ago, writing on social media, "I don't want my girls watching other trusted adults (albeit dogs!) expressing dissatisfaction with how their body looks. All bodies are good bodies".

On Friday she expressed her support for the decision.

"The controversial @officialblueytv episode with the uncomfortable body shaming part has been improved, with the weight references and scales removed," she sad on social media.
