Blue, red, saffron come together against Pahalgam attack in JNU presidential debate

From Gujarat to Gaza, slogans and speeches at the JNU presidential debate on Wednesday did not only focus on what is happening in the university campus but touched matters across the nation and the globe.

As a right-wing students’ group chanted “Jai Shree Ram” waving saffron flags, another raised “Jai Bhim” slogans and brandished blue flags honouring Dalit resistance. With their red flags, left-wing students’ group All India Students’ Association also displayed the Palestinian flag as candidates eyeing the JNUSU president’s post engaged in a fiery war of words.

Candidates from across the ideological spectrum were, however, united in condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam at the debate.

Elections for the Jawaharlal Nehru University student union will be held on Friday.

After several years, left-wing students’ groups, such as AISA and Student Federation of India, are not contesting the elections together - a move that is expected to benefit the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
