Columbus Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner is facing a significant setback as he is expected to miss a substantial portion of the upcoming season due to shoulder surgery. The 31-year-old forward sustained a shoulder injury during a practice session last Friday, leading to the need for surgical intervention. The procedure took place at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, just one day before the team's season opener.
General manager Don Waddell expressed optimism about Jenner's recovery, stating that the team hopes for his return before the conclusion of the season. Jenner, who has been serving as the team captain since the 2021-22 season, holds a prominent position in the Blue Jackets' history. He currently holds the record for most games played and ranks third in both goals and points for the franchise.
During the previous season, Jenner played a pivotal role for the team, finishing as the second-highest goal scorer with 22 goals and contributing 13 assists. His absence will undoubtedly be felt by the club; however, Waddell highlighted the presence of a strong leadership group within the team. He expressed confidence in other players stepping up to assume greater responsibilities both on and off the ice in Jenner's absence.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are set to kick off their season on Thursday night with a game against the Minnesota Wild. Despite the challenges posed by Jenner's injury, the team remains focused on the task at hand as they begin their campaign in the highly competitive NHL.
