North Lanarkshire Council planners have given the go-ahead for new homes to be built on the site where a boxing club currently stands.
The council has given the green light to the erection of one and two storey houses and cottage flats, totalling 20 units, with associated roads and landscaping works in Motherwell’s Mabel Street.
The site is currently home to Forgewood Boxing Club, which objected to the plans.
In a statement on the council’s planning portal, one club official stated: “I am somewhat surprised to have seen this planning application to build on the land currently occupied by Forgewood Amateur Boxing Club.
“The club have not received any direct communication from North Lanarkshire Council regarding the planning request.
"We were advised of the application from a neighbour.
“The boxing club facilitated extensive discussion during 2019 and 2020 to support North Lanarkshire Council with the request for a Regeneration Capital Grant to which the council was unsuccessful.
“I am therefore extremely surprised and disappointed, to say the least, that there has been no further correspondence or communication on the relocation of the Forgewood Boxing Club and indeed how this planning application came to be without consultation.”
The proposal is for 10 houses and 10 flats with the homes being used for social housing.
In his report, local authority case officer, Keith Bathgate, said: “The council is the club’s landlord and discussions about relocating the club have not been concluded , so the club objects to the application.
“However, these are legal matters between the club and the council as landlord and they do not relate directly to the planning application.
“They are also similar to issues raised by the club during the previous application.
“The proposed development can be accommodated without detriment to the surrounding areas and will contribute towards the supply of new housing in accordance with the council’s Affordable Housing policy.”
