Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to preside over two U.N. Security Council meetings this week, focusing on artificial intelligence and the conflict in Sudan. The U.S. holds the presidency of the Security Council this month, allowing Blinken to lead discussions on these critical topics.

Why AI and Sudan?

The U.S. has taken a strategic approach in selecting the agenda items for the Security Council meetings. With Russia and China blocking action on Ukraine and the Middle East, the U.S. has opted to address artificial intelligence, an area where it leads globally. The U.S. sponsored the first U.N. resolution on AI, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the technology benefits all nations while upholding human rights.

Additionally, the U.S. is shining a spotlight on the crisis in Sudan, where conflict between rival factions has led to a dire humanitarian situation. The U.S. seeks to raise awareness about the plight of the Sudanese people and work towards finding solutions to the ongoing crisis.

U.S.-Russia Relations

While tensions between the U.S. and Russia persist, Blinken's interactions with Russian diplomats at the U.N. have been limited. Despite representing the U.S. at Security Council meetings on critical issues like Ukraine and Gaza, direct confrontations between Blinken and Russian officials have been rare.

Although both countries hold permanent seats on the Security Council, recent meetings have not seen significant engagement between Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The focus remains on diplomatic discussions within the council framework.

As Secretary Blinken concludes his engagements with the U.N. Security Council, the emphasis on AI and Sudan underscores the U.S.' commitment to addressing pressing global challenges and promoting international cooperation.
