Blinken due in town for security talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai in Bangkok after his trip to Bali in Indonesia.

The American embassy posted on its website on Tuesday that Mr Blinken would travel to Bali and Bangkok from Wednesday until July 11 but it did not specify the dates of his visit to Thailand.

Mr Blinken will attend the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bali, where he will reinforce the United States' commitment to working with international partners to confront global challenges, including food and energy insecurity and the threat Russia's continued war against Ukraine presents to the international order.

He will hold a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and will also meet China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the summit.

In Bangkok, Mr Blinken will discuss issues including building on the successes of Thailand's Apec 2022 agenda during the United States' 2023 Apec host year, expanding health and climate cooperation, and addressing the crisis in Myanmar. He will also meet alumni of US exchange programmes, tour the Department of Disease Control's Emergency Operations Centre, and visit a shelter and welfare centre for victims of human trafficking. This aims to make up for his shortened trip to the region in December after a member of his team contracted Covid-19.
