'Blindsided' Ninnis ready for legal stoush with 36ers

NBL stalwart Scott Ninnis has engaged a legal team after being "completely blindsided" by his axing as coach of the Adelaide 36ers.

Ninnis was sensationally sacked by the Sixers on Monday morning, replaced by recently-appointed assistant coach Mike Wells for the 2024-25 season, which begins next month.

The news shocked players and came after Ninnis had signed a two-year contract in February during a solid stint as interim coach.

The club legend was handed the reins following predecessor CJ Bruton's departure last December.

Sixers chief executive Nic Barbato and basketball operations manager Matt Weston attempted to explain the decision on Monday by claiming Ninnis failed to meet club standards.

The pair claimed Ninnis' short reign had been a "constant challenge".

The 58-year-old responded on Thursday in a statement released to media.

"I've put my heart and soul into this club for nearly half my life and I'm deeply disappointed and hurt by this outcome," Ninnis said in the statement.

"I walk out with my head held high knowing what I achieved at the end of last season and what I was putting in place for the season ahead.

"I'll share more in the future. I have a two-year contract with the club which I expect to be honoured.

"For now, this matter is in the hands of my legal team."

Ninnis said it had been a "very difficult" few days for himself and his family since his sacking, but has been overwhelmed by the support they have received.

"I was completely blindsided by Monday's news, just 11 days into pre-season," Ninnis said.

"The incredible support that I've received from current NBL coaches and players both past and present, as well as 36ers legends, family and friends, club sponsors and the South Australian basketball community has been overwhelming."

Originally Adelaide's head coach between 2008 and 2010, Ninnis won eight of 15 games after taking over from Bruton midway through last season.

The Sixers ultimately missed finals by one win and percentage, marking their sixth consecutive campaign without a post-season appearance.

Adelaide has gone through four different coaches in that time: Joey Wright, Conner Henry, Bruton and now Ninnis.

As a player, Ninnis helped the 36ers to NBL titles during the 1986 and 1998 seasons, and played for South East Melbourne Magic in their first title win in 1992.

Adelaide have signed former NBA big man Jarell Martin for the upcoming season, with Cairns Taipans forward Lat Mayen another key acquisition.
