There are lots of things we don’t give a second thought to, and the way we draw our blinds at night is one of them. Up or down is the question and it is one we should all be thinking about if we care about our privacy and security.
Ensuring your blinds are fully closed could also help avoid maximum embarrassment and unwelcome prying eyes, as ignorance is not always bliss when it comes to awkward interactions with neighbours or the postie. There’s no right or wrong way to turn your blinds, but one may be more suitable than the other, depending on our needs.
The choice comes down to our lighting and privacy requirements at different times of the day and, of course, personal preference.
But there is most certainly a right way according to one blind expert who posted on their TikTok under the name @virtuallyblinded to show us how it should be done.
They have uploaded a video sharing the "privacy tip", and so far it has had over 200,000 likes.
Blinds that are positioned incorrectly, when it is dark, means that people can look in.
It is even worse when the lights are on, making it easier for people outside to see everything.
But thankfully is a very easy remedy to this dilemma. "Face them up instead," says the expert, and it makes perfect sense.
When the blinds are facing up, only the slats can be seen. This is most useful for people who have blinds on the first floor of their home.
But, for rooms on upper floors, close the slats down so people who are looking up can't see you.
Taking to the comments section on the video, one person shared another great tip for figuring out which direction your blinds should be facing. .
"Downstairs blinds go up and upstairs blinds go down… always turn blinds opposite direction of what floor they are on," they wrote.
