Blaze breaks out in derelict building next to chocolate shop

A fire broke out in a derelict building next to a chocolate shop.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to New Chester Road in New Ferry at around 7pm today. Four fire engines and an aerial view were all in attendance.

Photos and videos of the scene show plumes of smoke coming from the roof of the three-storey, derelict building. A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed the blaze was coming from the loft space.

One person said the incident was also causing a build up of traffic as firefighters tackled the blaze. Labour MP for Wirral South, Alison McGovern urged residents to avoid the area allowing crews "to do their job."

She said on Twitter: "Fire in New Ferry tonight on New Chester Road, New Ferry Park end. For now, grateful if everyone can avoid the area and give the Fire Service the space to do their job."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "We had a number of calls of a fire to an empty building on New Chester Road in New Ferry. It is a three-storey building and part of a row of terraces. The building is unoccupied."

They added: "The fire is in the loft space and four fire engines and an aerial view is at the scene."
