Radio star Blathnaid Treacy has opened up about the special moment she told her family she was pregnant.

She said: “This is the 12th grandchild. I’m the youngest of six.

"Actually, we told our family at Christmas time, which was really nice. Some of them already knew but there were a good few who didn’t.

“My mum and my sister are so excited.”

The Wicklow star said she couldn’t wait to find out the gender and she’s now starting to get excited as she enjoys her second trimester.

“I couldn’t wait. I don’t know how people keep it as a surprise (the baby’s gender).

“It is so precarious because you don’t know what can happen so I was trying not to get too excited but then we had another scan so I went out and bought something small.

"My mum and my sister have been picking up things as well so I’m slowly but surely getting excited and I’m getting the spare room organised for her and things like that.

“But again, I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. I don’t want to jinx myself.

“Everything is going really well so far. I’ve got nothing to worry about yet. I am enjoying it. There is no reason to be stressed right now.

“I can’t wait to see what she looks like. It’s very exciting.

“I’m feeling really good. I’m 21 weeks now and it’s all going well so far. The first trimester is always a bit challenging for everybody because you’re just a bit nauseous and you’re a bit tired and you’re hormonal and you can’t tell anyone and it’s all exciting but also you feel like it’s the second day of a hangover constantly,” she said joking.

Blathnaid was speaking at the launch of Tesco’s latest community initiative inviting Community Groups from all over Ireland to apply for a chance to win one of four €25,000 donations.

‘The 25 Years Community Fund’ is designed to help groups to realise a once-off special project from start to finish.

Applications will be grouped according to locations and one cause from Munster; Leinster; Connacht and Ulster; and Dublin will receive a €25,000 donation each to help support their communities. Local organisations can apply online at www.tescoireland.ie or scan the QR code on the Tesco community board located at the front of all 164 stores nationwide.

The new initiative coincides with new research from Tesco which found that more than a third of people (35%) in Leinster currently volunteer with or work for an organisation or good cause in their local community while more than a third (40%) of those surveyed said that they donate to a local good cause in their local community.

Out of 283 respondents in Leinster, more than three quarters (82%) said that they will donate to a good cause in their local community in 2023 with the majority of respondents (82%) agreeing that local organisations facilitate a greater feeling of empowerment and inclusion in local communities.

Speaking at the launch Rosemary Garth, Communications Director, Tesco Ireland said “For 25 years we’ve been supporting the communities we live and work in, and this year more than ever, we wanted to do something special for our communities.

We are making €100,000 in funding available to support four causes or community projects to create their dream project or initiative, each receiving €25,000. Maybe there’s a project or community group out there that has a special project on their wish list that they’ve only ever dreamed of being able to fund?

"Whether your voluntary group has never been a recipient of our ongoing Community Fund, or been in it once or many times, now is your chance to apply for the chance to receive €25,000 – we want to hear from you.”

The closing date for causes to enter is February 26. The winners will be announced following judging in March 2023.
