Golf Monthly Verdict

This is a beautiful, tree-lined oasis of golf that is far more about strategic play than brute force. Happily, the trees beautifully separate the holes rather than simply intimidate the golfer, and this is a very pretty place to enjoy a day’s golf.

Reasons To Play Blairgowrie

– Experience one of the most peaceful, serene courses in Scotland

– A tree-lined, heathland classic kept in great shape

– If there is time, play the Lansdowne Course too, it’s lovely

UK & Ireland Top 100 Golf Courses 2025/26 - 90

Blairgowrie Golf Club is one of many credits on the illustrious CV of James Braid. He was one of golf’s most prolific architects whose name appears numerous times in the Top 100 Golf Courses UK & Ireland either as the original designer or responsible for changes. Here, the Rosemount Course is one of two very fine courses and it is the great man’s 1930s reworking of an earlier Alister MacKenzie design. I think it is one of the best golf courses in Scotland.

Many golfers are intimidated by tree-lined fairways, but while positioning from the tee is important here, it is more in preparation for the approach as the fairways are reasonably wide. The club dates back to 1889, and it was visited by Old Tom Morris for a match against the captain and the secretary. He said afterwards that the site was “the most beautiful inland green I have ever seen.”

This was, of course, way before the Braid reworking, but there is no doubting that this is a glorious site of mature and extremely attractive woodland. The course itself can best be described as heathland and is one of the best such layouts in the UK. Swathes of pine and silver birch separate the holes, and this leads to a happy feeling of seclusion, as though you are playing in a world entirely of your own.

As I mentioned, the exercise of finding the fairways is far more about accuracy than strength. Your reward for success will be the chance to play from a perfect lie, and the greens are kept in tip-top order. In the height of the playing season, they are often scarily fast. If you find the fairway and have a strong short game, there is every chance to score well here.

There is good variety in the par 4s which range from just about driveable - though maybe not for me - to just about unreachable. The four par 5s all come from the 5th to the 14th, and the short holes include the picturesque 17th, Plateau, which is classic MacKenzie with its 2-tier green. This is certainly one of the best inland golf courses in Scotland.

The second course here, the Lansdowne, is also extremely enjoyable and highly regarded, as is the delightful 9-hole Wee Course.

What's new for 2025/26? What our panellists said...

The signature hole at seventeen definitely leaves a memory - good or bad depending on the score. I had a two so it’s one of my favourite holes on the course! Until there, the rest of the holes seem to merge into one… all very similar being tree lined with long second shots into bunker guarded greens.

No real standout memories or memorable holes. No bad holes, just no great ones either.

The course is very private with tree-lined fairways creating a tunnel effect, but one that is inviting and pleasing to the eye.
