Blackpool Illuminations 2019: What time do the lights switch on, when is it and everything else you need to know

It's a staple in the annual calender for the seaside resort which can only mean one thing - it's almost time for Blackpool Illuminations.

This weekend, Blackpool promenade will once again being a shining light in the North as millions of visitors will be dazzled by the event dubbed 'the greatest free light show on earth'.

The town will be the buzz of excitement and activity when more than one million bulbs stretch for six miles along the prom are lit up once again.

The lights will then take pride of place in the seaside town for 66 nights to be exact and around four MILLION people flock to the beach side each year during the run.

The reason the event is a staple is because the Illuminations have been a fixture in Blackpool since 1879 and continue to attract more and more visitors every year.

When and what time is the switch on?

The big switch on will take place with a special live event at Tower Headland on Friday August 30.

All the action will kick off at 4pm.

There will then before a concert before the switch on later on the evening. The event will finish at 10pm.

Who is switching on the Illuminations?

Coronation Street star and Blackpool-native Lucy Fallon will pull the famous switch in front of 20,000 people and kick start the 2019 Illuminations season.

The 23-year-old said of her starring role in her home town: "I'm so excited and honoured to be switching on the Illuminations in Blackpool this year - it's always been a special tradition here and as a local girl it is going to be extra special this year for me and my family."

Before the ITV actress, who was born in Cleveleys, triggers the millions of lights, Brit Award-winng band Busted will take to the stage as well as singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt, Becky Hill and British drum and bass duo Sigma in what is set to be spectacular style.

For Britain's Got Talent winners and top dance group, Diversity, as well as Club MTV DJs R3wire & Varski will also join the line-up.

What are the daily switch on and off times for the Illuminations?

As the weeks go one and we wave goodbye to summer, the times the Illuminations are switched on gets earlier.

At the end of British Summer Time when the clocks go back an hour - which this year is on Sunday October 27 - the Lights are turned on at 5pm.

The times they are switched off also differ too.

From Monday to Thursday, lights are out at 10.30pm. This increases to midnight on a Friday and Saturday night before dropping to 11pm on a Sunday.

When do the light's switch off for 2019?

We hate to think of it all coming to an end already but so you don't miss out, the Illuminations will be switched off for the last time of 2019 on Sunday November 3 at 11pm.

Organisers changed the date in 2014, giving visitors an extra week to catch a glimpse of the famous lights.

What else is happening during the Illuminations run?

As well as seeing the Illuminations in all their shining glory for themselves, there's also plenty more you can get involved with.

During October half-term, from the 11th to the 26th, the LightPool Festival will take place with light, fire and plenty of spectacles taking place on the streets of Blackpool.

Carnival of the Lights, Carnival Magic and Adonias by Pyronix is just some of the things you will be able to watch during the holiday.

Blackpool will also once again be hosting the annual World Fireworks Championships from the North Pier.

The free annual event takes place every Friday night in September (6, 13, 20) and will see pyrotechnic teams from across the globe battle it out to be crowned world champions in a finale on September 27.

If you want to get a good spot to see the fireworks fired over the sea, you can get a good viewing spot at Tower Festival Headland on the promenade. But don't worry if it's too busy, you can get a good view from anywhere on the seafront.
