Blackout warning as energy experts urge people to buy one thing in preparation for power cuts

It was recently announced the UK may be facing a series of planned blackouts this winter, to combat a shortage of gas.

The National Grid warned these could be taking place on " really cold evenings " between 4pm and 7pm over the coming months, if the weather becomes so cold that it affects the country's gas supplies.

And while the energy company said the blackouts are "unlikely", households are being urged to take the precautions to protect themselves in case they do end up happening.

Speaking at the Financial Times Energy Transition summit, National Grid head John Pettigrew warned they may have to impose the blackouts in January and February.

Staying warm will be a priority for many households, and according to the boiler company Heatable, buying a portable propane heater is a good idea as they are great for emergencies.

In an ideal situation, homes would have a back up energy and heat source in the event of a blackout.

For those fortunate enough, an open fireplace or wood stove will likely be a good alternative to gas central heating.

However, a recent survey by Heatable revealed most people do not have open fireplaces, so they should go down a different route to stay warm.

Ben Price, co-founder at heating and energy company Heatable provided the following advice: "For those without a fireplace, the next best option is a portable propane heater, perfectly suited for emergency situations like a temporary blackout protocol, as the National Gridhave referenced.

"However, one thing that people should remember is that these heaters should be used in accordance with their safety manuals."

These should also only ever be used on a hard, fireproof surface, and be kept away from any children, pets or flammable materials. You should also have a working carbon monoxide and smoke alarm installed in your home and always ensure the heater is designed for indoor use.

Aside from buying a propane heater, there are a couple of other ways that we can stay warm during the blackouts if they happen.

Two of the most effective ones, which are practically free, are to wear more clothes and ensure you're staying active.

Wearing more layers will ensure your body is well insulated and that your body heat stays trapped for longer.

Jennifer Warren, spokesperson at Energyguide.org.uk also added: "Most importantly ensure you wear a hat, gloves and a scarf, this is especially important when you consider that between 40-45 percent of body heat is lost through the head and neck.

"Exercising is also incredibly useful as it helps your body output its own heat, this occurs due to our muscles converting stored energy into heat energy, causing your body to warm up."

There is a perception that warm drinks can also help you stay warm, but they aren't the most effective, especially when you consider the costs of using the kettle.

However, in reality the temperature increase is about 2.5 degrees and will only last for about 20 minutes. After that small amount of time, your body temperature will return to normal.
