Blackburn handed major injury blow ahead of Nottingham Forest clash

Blackburn Rovers will be without defender Callum Brittain for next week’s Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest after he picked up an injury at the weekend.

Unlike the Premier League, Championship clubs returned to action last weekend after a shorter break for the World Cup. Blackburn hosted local rivals Preston North End at Ewood Park, but it was a return to forget for the home side.

Forest have a bit longer until they return to action as they make the journey to Blackburn in the League Cup on Wednesday, December 21. That game comes just six days before the Reds travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United in the Premier League.

Goals from Ben Woodburn, Ched Evans (x2) and Ben Whiteman saw them fall to a 4-1 defeat. The match also saw Brittain substituted with a knee injury in just the seventh minute after the right-back was unable to continue.

Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson confirmed that the full-back had been taken to hospital. “It was the challenge, I don’t exactly how bad it is," he said, via LancsLive ."He went to the hospital so we will see. It’s too early to say.”

It has now been confirmed by the club that he will face weeks on the sidelines after suffering a partial tear to his medial collateral ligament. It means he will miss the clash against Forest.

What sort of team Steve Cooper will decide to pick against Blackburn is still to be seen. Early returns for the likes of Brennan Johnson and Neco Williams from the World Cup could put them in contention, although the Forest boss may also have an eye on the trip to Old Trafford too.
