What is Black Friday?
Black Friday starts every year after Thanksgiving on the following Friday in the United States. It's the beginning of the Christmas shopping period for many, especially this year with Thanksgiving falling so late in the year (Nov 28). It's a time when many retailers drop prices on stock old and new across their portfolio.
When is Black Friday 2024?
Black Friday 2024 starts at midnight Friday November 29 and ends 23:59 Friday November 29 but the Black Friday weekend runs through Saturday and Sunday and the sale continues through Cyber Monday December 2.
Live Science team is officially logging on! Black Friday has officially begun and we're already seeing some huge discounts on cameras, optics and fitness gear. We will be highlighting some of the very best discounts you can find on items like telescopes, binoculars, cameras, fitness trackers and streaming so you can spend more time enjoying the science that you love, for less.
We thought we'd crack things off with this huge saving on the Sony A7R V mirrorless camera we spotted over at Walmart.
It's $600 cheaper, the lowest price we've seen, and our staff writer (and photographer in her own right) Kimberley Lane reviewed the A7R V for our sister site Space.com saying it has the best autofocus we've tested in a full-frame mirrorless, ideal for pin-sharp wildlife photography.
Calling all stargazers, you can save $300 on the 'world's most beloved' telescope, the Celestron NexStar 8SE at Amazon. Our managing editor said "It’s not cheap, but what you get for the price is a fantastic night sky observing instrument that won’t let you down." when they reviewed the Celestron NexStar 8SE, and it's proven time and time again to be one of the best telescopes you can buy.
Although it's not cheap whichever way you slice it, the advantage of the 8SE is that you can observe closer objects like the moon and planets and deep-sky objects like nebulas and galaxies — in most cheaper telescopes you only tend to get one or the other.
Plus, it could be worth investing now so you don't need to upgrade later down the line. Our staff writer, Kimberley Lane, bought a cheaper telescope in the Prime Day sale and is now immediately ready to upgrade after only using it a handful of times.
Celestron NexStar 8SE: was $1,599 now $1,299
Telescopes can be very heavy, especially if, like our optics writer, you have the upper body strength of a kitten. This is where a great pair of binoculars have an advantage in being a lot more portable and easier to transport to dark skies to get a decent look at the night sky. Although, you'll obviously not get as good a view as you would with one of the best telescopes, so it's a balancing act.
We rated the Celestron SkyMaster Pro 20x80 the best pair of binoculars for stargazing, and in our review, again, by our managing editor, we said "For the money, it’s hard to beat their reach and clarity". One of our staff writers has the non-pro version, and their lack of fogproofness has proven to be incredibly annoying, so we'd recommend paying a bit more for the better model.
Celestron SkyMaster Pro 20x80: was $320 now $211
Choose your fighter: A scientifically accurate star projector that serves as a wonderful educational tool to learn about the universe, or a Pretty Light for your bedroom. Those are the two main camps when it comes to the best star projectors, and the Pococo Galaxy Projector sits...somewhere in the middle.
It comes with two sets of discs, as we mentioned in our Pococo Galaxy Star Projector review, and there are loads of others you can buy separately for bright, detailed and real-looking projections of the constellations, planets, nebulas, moon phases and more. It was one of the quieter projectors we've tested (great for falling asleep), so much so that our reviewer had to physically hold her ear against it in order to actually hear the motor. It's pretty much identical to the Orzorz Galaxy Lite, in everything other than looks — and it's the same price.
Pococo Galaxy Projector: was $119.99 now $79.99
Back on cameras now, and Canon shooters will be thrilled to see that the Canon EOS R5 is now $2,479 at Walmart.
We're not surprised that the R5 has been included in both the Black Friday offers and the Prime Day deals last month, with the release of the R5 Mark II in the summer, it's the perfect time to get your hands on the original model (which is still pretty great, in our opinion).
In our Canon EOS R5 review, we said it was "effectively a cheat code for capturing photos of animals", making it one of the best cameras for wildlife photography. That said, it'll excel in pretty much any style of photography, including astro, and it's still considered one of the best even 4 years after its release in 2020.
The only real downside is its infamous video overheating issues, but if you don't shoot much video, then happy days! If you do, then stick around as we've found some other deals on cameras that don't throw a tantrum about shooting longer videos.
If you want to get into telescopes and enjoy a challenge, the Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ is a great project to sink your teeth into and give you a crash course on telescopes.
Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ: was $349.95 now $246.49
Our staff writer bought one back in the Prime Day sales, and although the instructions leave a fair amount to be desired, anyone who likes to tinker and throw themselves into a project will get on well with this telescope. It gives beautiful views of the Moon, and you can make out Jupiter and its four Galilean moons, plus Jupiter's rings are also visible, but it lacks the power to see anything further afield.
If, however, you weren't born with patience and want to get up and running at the drop of a hat, a smart telescope might be more for you, where you can view almost any object in the sky with just a tap of a button. But obviously, you'll need to pay a lot more for that luxury. Still, for anyone on a budget who wants to learn about telescopes and the sky, it's a worthwhile purchase.
Now, time for something completely different. Whether you take jaw-dropping pictures of nature or spend your nights stargazing, you want a watch that is reliable, durable and useful. Garmin is your best pick here: these smartwatches are made to last in the great outdoors, and their fitness-tracking capabilities are among some of the best on the market. And Black Friday, incidentally, is one of the best times to invest in one of these high-tech gadgets.
But which Garmin watch should you choose? That is a tricky question to answer. Our health writers can think of many excellent Black Friday deals. This gem is perhaps best for newcomers to advanced fitness tracking: Garmin Instinct 2 is now 33% off at Best Buy, with more color options available at Walmart and Amazon. It is now just $199.99. We liked Garmin Instinct 2 for its affordable allure, and right now, you can get it even cheaper.
If Garmin Instinct 2 does not rustle your feathers, the Garmin Forerunner 955 may be more up your street. This sleek sports watch has now been discounted by a round $100 at Best Buy, bringing its price down to just $399.99. Moreover, you can get the same discount on this model at Amazon, and this is where you get even more color options to better match your style. But, why Forerunner 955 specifically, you may ask?
This is a type of a Garmin watch you buy if you are serious about your health and fitness. It is like having a pocket-sized personal trainer, but with all the digital frills you can think of. Our health writers are big fans of the Forerunner range, and would recommend these gadgets to anyone who wants to level up their exercise performance and improve their wellbeing. And this discount is simply too good to ignore.
For those of us who like to travel and have little knowledge of digital photography (we often just rely on our smartphones for convenience, don't we), it is not easy to pick a camera. There are plenty of excellent Black Friday deals swirling around online, but not many of these offers cater to the entry-level folk (or, perhaps, we just simply do not understand the specs). There are some exceptions, of course, and one of them is Canon EOS R6 Mark II.
This lovely entry-level camera is now $310 off at Walmart. It can shoot up to 40 FPS and it has accurate animal autofocus, making it fantastic for wildlife photography. Now, that sounds like something we would do. Prepping for your next overseas trip? The Canon EOS R6 Mark II sounds like a great shot to save money this Black Friday.
Kimberley Lane logging back on now to run over some more deals on cameras, lenses, binoculars and telescopes.
In other news, during the hour she was gone she impulse bought a camera and a lens — the Sony A7R V (which is $2,799 at Walmart and is her favorite camera), and the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 II GM OSS to go on it, which is also cheapest at Walmart — now $2,315.
We'll be checking out some more amazing optics deals and bringing them straight to you here, so sit tight!
We've mentioned a couple of traditional style telescopes, now it's time to please the tech nerds. For Black Friday you can get 20% off ALL Unistellar Products when you buy directly through their website (though, many of the popular merchants are price-matching them).
We thought the Unistellar eVscope 2 was the best smart telescope on the market, and we gave it 4.5/5 stars in our Unistellar eVscope 2 review — get it now at Unistellar for $3,919 (that's $980 off!).
If you don't have the budget for that, we also really loved the Unistellar eQuinox 2 when we reviewed it, also awarding it 4.5/5 stars. You can save $500 and get it for just $1,999, which is very affordable for a smart telescope.
Finally, their newest model, the Odyssey and Odyssey Pro, are both discounted as well. We're yet to review them, but the Odyssey is now $1,839 and the Pro is $3,199. Plus, you can also get 20% off all their backpacks and filters, too.
Want great views of the moon (like so)? Kimberley bought the Celestron SkyMaster 15x70 binoculars back during Prime Day, and they're on offer again for just $89.99 at Amazon. Admittedly, it's not the biggest saving in the world, BUT they're great for close-up views of the moon, and the images are bright and detailed. She set it up in her garden for some family members to look through, and it certainly gave them the 'wow' factor, but serious astronomers may not have the same reaction.
There is chromatic aberration around the edges of the lunar wonder, (more so than this smartphone photo depicts), which is expected for the low price, however, and these are her exact words: "The color fringing actually makes it look very pretty. It looks like the Moon has uploaded an Instagram story".
If optical defects bother you, then you'll want to pay more and get the Pro versions, but they're not on offer at the moment.
Are you a telescope newbie? Do you have zero knowledge of the night sky? Do you want something quick and easy to set up and can use alongside your phone? Are you on a budget?
If the answer to those questions was 'yes', then the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 80AZ will be for you, now just $179.99 at Amazon. The StarSense technology connects to the corresponding app on your phone, which analyzes the sky and shows you the exact objects visible based on your current time and location, making it a breeze for new users who don't know their Andromeda from Uranus.
We've not tested it out yet, but you'll be able to get a decent view of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and some deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula (but you'll likely need to be in a dark sky location to see deep-sky objects well). It was cheaper in August, and it may not have made our best telescopes guide, but this is still a really good price.
Aaand we are back to health tech deals, as our health writer Anna Gora takes the wheel. Here is your respite from cameras, telescopes and other big pieces of machinery — small and discreet smart rings. These tiny fitness trackers get widely discounted during Black Friday, so if you have ever considered ditching your monstrous smartwatch in favor of something less obnoxious, now is the time to take the plunge.
For starters, our favorite Oura Ring Generation 3 — which we named the best smart ring in our guide to the best fitness trackers on the market — is now $50 cheaper at Amazon. Another favorite of ours, the Ultrahuman Ring AIR (our loyal travel companion, as you can see in the picture above) has been discounted by $50 at Amazon. Lastly, the RingConn Gen 1 is now 35% off at Amazon. Plenty to save, plenty to gain.
Looking for a Christmas gift for your nature-loving teenage daughter? Unsure what to buy your science-lowing nephew? Finding good gifts for youngsters may be tricky, especially if they have a penchant for exploring the natural world. If you want to dazzle your teen family members this Christmas, forget about books (we are sure you have given them enough of those already) and give them some cool binoculars instead.
Now, we are all more strapped for cash before Christmas, but science gifts do not have to cost the earth. For example, Nikon Prostaff binoculars are now 35% cheaper at Amazon. This Black Friday deal sends the price of this gadget to just under $97. We gave 4 out of 5 stars to the Nikon Prostaff 8x42 variant (it is identical except for the slight difference in magnification), and named it the best option for teens in our guide to the best binoculars for kids. A fantastic beginner pair and an excellent Christmas gift.
If you have been with us for a while, you know we are big fans of Garmin watches here at Live Science. These fitness trackers are perfect companions for the great outdoors, whether you are on a safari photoshoot or hitting a PB during an ultra-marathon. But, and there is always a but, Garmin watches lack one important thing — they do not tend to look good. Now, we can argue on that matter for sure, but we have to admit it is hard to imagine those chunky rugged watches as something that would suit formal attire. So what is left?
The Polar Ignite 3 Titanium. This boosted version of the Polar's flagship fitness tracker is now $140 cheaper at Walmart, bringing its price down to $259.97. That is a 35% discount right there. The Ignite 3 Titanium is a real piece of eye candy (as you can see in the picture above), and Polar's heart rate tracking prowess is widely known in the fitness industry. With this deal, you can get this sleek wearable at a historically low price.
That was the last from our health writer today, see you again tomorrow!
Back with our optics writer for the next couple of hours now — with her takeaway on the way, and sat with her heated throw (seriously, you should get one), she's back again to bring you some more tempting deals.
Want the best camera for astrophotography? Let us introduce you to the Sony A7 IV, now just $1,860 at Walmart. Our optics writer and managing editor went on a trip to Glastonbury Tor to do some astrophotography, and they were both very impressed at how well the A7 IV handles noise, especially compared to most other Sony models they've reviewed between them. The 33MP resolution is great for all applications, and the autofocus is reliable and follows subjects accurately.
The Sony A7 IV earned 4.5/5 stars in our full review, and there's a 'secret' feature called Bright Monitoring, which, when activated, brightens the screen so you can see your composition better in the dark. We could even see where the Milky Way was in the shot. It is grainy, and there's a bit of lag, but it was very useful for composing without having to guess where celestial subjects were.
Lens deals are a bit thin on the ground this Black Friday, but here's what we've found so far:
Astro-shooters will love the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens, now $2,099 at Amazon. While it's not as dedicated to astro as a prime lens would be, it's a great option if you shoot general wide-angle images and don't want to be limited to one specific focal length.
For wildlife photographers, both the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS and the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM are both discounted, priced at $1,798 and $2,499 respectively. Both of these are the lowest ever price (aside from around one day earlier this month when the Sony was $100 cheaper), and they're ideal for zooming in on wildlife, but also great for pairing with a star tracker for some impressive deep-space astrophotography.
We'll keep hunting for more worthy lens deals!
If you love the thought of a telescope with a database that effortlessly locates and automatically tracks your chosen objects but you don't want to pay out the nose for a fancy smart telescope, the Celestron NexStar 130SLT is a great option, and it's not too expensive.
Save 24% on the Celestron NexStar 130SLT, now $484.49 at Amazon.
You can view Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s moons and cloud bands and the Moon in brilliant detail, although you'll need something more powerful to view deep-space objects. That said, its database of over 4,000 celestial subjects will still give you plenty to choose from, and it'll take you straight there at the press of a button.
Now for something quite cute — this little Astronaut Star Projector is just $12.99 at Amazon for Black Friday (when you add the coupon at the checkout).
It went viral on TikTok earlier in the year, and we think it's a great gift for kids or space lovers this holiday season. It has 8 different nebula colors to choose from, and it also displays green stars (but you can turn them off).
It comes with a remote for easy control, and you can adjust the helmet to project onto any surface thanks to its 360-degree rotation (although, might look slightly weird if his head is on backwards). Still, it'll make for a perfect nightlight for your kid's bedroom.
Finally, the product description says it would apparently make an excellent anniversary present....but you know, flowers and jewelry are also fine!
Bigger isn't always better, as proven by the OM System OM-1 Mark II. Now $1,824.95 at Walmart, this micro four-thirds camera is not to be underestimated.
It has an astonishing number of really useful features, particularly for astrophotography. Live Composite makes shooting star trails a doddle (see the second image above), as it shows what your image looks like in real-time so you know when you've reached your desired effect, and Starry Sky autofocus is bang on, we couldn't believe it. A game changer for beginners who struggle with nailing the focus — if you can afford it.
It can also shoot up to a, frankly, ridiculous 120FPS, (but if you're normal, anywhere between 10-40FPS is fine) — but this blisteringly fast burst rate makes it a fantastic camera for wildlife or fast-action photography, and the autofocus did a great job of keeping up.
AND it even answered the age-old question: 'Is it a bird? Is it a plane?' — It's a bird, apparently, according to the OM-1 Mark II. We tried to lock on to a plane in airplane mode and it wasn't having any of it, but when we switched to bird mode it worked perfectly. So there you go.
Our optics writer signing off for the night now (it's 8PM here in the UK) — see you tomorrow for more Black Friday deals on cameras, lenses, telescopes and binoculars.
Happy shopping!
Managing Editor, Jase Parnell-Brookes here, tuning in for some Black Friday camera deal hunting. Having been a photographer for the better part of two decades and working in the editorial world for over ten years countless cameras, lenses, telescopes and other optics gear have passed through these hands.
From reversing lenses to take macro photos of jumping spiders, to shooting wide-field astrophotography of the northern lights in Iceland and up inside the Arctic Circle, even observing and shooting deep sky objects with telescopes there isn’t any part of optics and cameras that we don’t love.
Just grabbing a late-night beverage and we’ll be right back with some round-ups of the tops Black Friday deals available right now.
We love Nikon, even if Jase is a little biased (previously Technique Editor on N-Photo magazine, a Nikon-specific print mag.
Even though the company is 107 years old, one of the younger mirrorless cameras the Nikon Z8 is now $700 cheaper at B&H. Digital Camera World Editor James Artaius reviewed the Z8 back last year and gave it a solid 4.5/5 stars saying,
“The Nikon Z8 is referred to by Nikon as both "a baby Z9" and "the true successor to the Nikon D850". That’s high praise indeed, with the Z9 being the company’s cutting-edge, flagship mirrorless camera, and the D850 being widely regarded as the finest DSLR ever made.”
Further to our post on the Nikon Z8 deal that gives you $700 off our reviewer James also noted that due to its 45.7MP resolution, 8K 60p video and up to 120fps burst shooting, “[The Nikon Z8] can handle almost anything you throw at it; its continuous shooting speed and ferocious autofocus obviously make it one of the best wildlife cameras on the market, but it’s also an absolute powerhouse for anything from astrophotography to portraiture.
Managing Editor, Jase agrees, having reviewed it for sister site Space.com taking into account its astrophotography credentials and gave it a maximum 5/5 stars for its performance across a range of disciplines.
With Thanksgiving only just behind us and Christmas full-steam ahead we’re always on the lookout for technology that helps us keep track of our fitness levels. That’s why the Garmin Forerunner 165 smart watch caught our eye when we saw it for 20% off at Amazon.
While we haven’t reviewed this exact model we’ve extensively reviewed many Garmin fitness trackers for years and are almost always impressed with their performance.
With its bright AMOLED screen and built-in GPS to track pace and distance it also measured heart rate with its optical sensor. 11 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and 50 meters water resistance, the 165 also has an Sp02 sensor. Our resident running expert Kate Carter rates this smartwatch highly, saying,
“The Forerunner 165 is a fantastic value smartwatch for runners. Make no mistake, while the price may be 'entry-level' for a quality Garmin GPS watch, the features it offers are more than enough for even the most committed of runners.”
As a sub-three-hour marathon runner and an England Athletics coach, we trust her judgment!
We love nature documentaries, natural disaster movies, heck even a sprinkling of the old space magic with shows about the furthest flung planets in our solar system. That’s why this holiday season we’ll be cosying up with a warm drink and saving money while we’re at it, too.
75% off the first two months of Discovery Plus makes it $1.25 a month for two months and then $4.99 thereafter so long as you’re part of Amazon Prime (you can sign up for a 30-day free trial to qualify).
Well, it's the 14th hour of our Black Friday shift today on Live Science and we've spotted some absolute bargains.
Our favorites tonight are this Garmin Fenix 7 fitness tracker now over $250 off, the Pococo Galaxy star projector with 33% savings and 40% discount on the Canon EOS R5.
For now, though, Managing Editor Jase signing off. We'll be back in the morning with more stunning Black Friday discounts so you can spot stars, see wildlife and bring the cosmos inside for less.
Tarra in a bit!
Good morning! It's our optics writer, Kimberley Lane, signing on again. Over the past few years, she has tested a wide range of camera kit, including cameras, lenses, tripods, camera bags, and more.
She started taking photography more seriously after finding a natural talent for it when snapping smartphone pictures on holidays and day trips. In 2018, she invested in her first camera—a little Olympus Pen E-PL8. Over the years, she has enjoyed shooting landscapes and seascapes and has some stunning coastline near where she lives in South Wales to take advantage of. She enjoys photography as a way of getting outside into nature where she feels most calm — a feeling she aims to portray in her images.
Anyway, picking up where we left off yesterday — Kimberley has (unsurprisingly) bought yet more camera kit in the Black Friday deals, we'll be back in a few to tell you what we bought.
As promised, here is Kimberley's most recent photography haul:
As we mentioned yesterday, she bought the Sony A7R V, which is still the same low price of $2,799 today at Walmart as it was on Black Friday. And she obviously needed a lens to go with it, right? She opted for the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II (also still the same price of $2,315 as yesterday), after being impressed with it when she reviewed it over at Space.com
Since then, she decided to pick up a few accessories, or 'bits'. Since she bought from Amazon UK, where the deals are slightly different, here are some USA deals on the things she got:
- You can never have enough spare cards, right? 2 pack of Lexar Silver Professional 256 SD cards now 25% off — $104.75 at Amazon
- Also, Lexar Gold 1800x 128GB SD card now 25% off — $41.10 at Amazon (plus shipping)
- Same goes for spare batteries. These Sony-compatible batteries and charger set from NEEWER are 31% off — get this 2-pack and charger now for just $37.12 (it also has a couple of card slots).
- Photographers also can never have enough storage. Save $30 on the LaCie Rugged 5TB external hard drive at Amazon (this is its lowest-ever price).
- Finally, this portable Anker Power Bank is now 30% off when you add the discount code — now just over $17 at Amazon. A must-have for keeping your gear full of juice during long nights shooting the stars.
**PRICE DROP!**
We've been checking the deals this morning for any changes, and the Sony A1 has dropped by $35 overnight — now $5,019.95 at Walmart.
Listen, we aren't going to lie to you and pretend this is the biggest price drop ever, as $5,000 is still a lot of money...a very lot of money. However, perhaps you could use that $35 saving to buy one of the accessory deals we listed below?
Kimberley reviewed the Sony A1 last year and it was just about the best camera she's ever tested (and she can't wait to get her paws on the Mark II) — even if it is a bit overkill for most users. Still, for professional photographers who make money from photography as a career and need the best of the best, this is it.
Additionally, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II has increased by $10, and the Nikon Z6 II has reduced by $5 overnight.
PRICE UPDATE - BINOCULARS
We've checked the prices on the Black Friday binocular deals and the update is....that there is no update. They are all the same as they were yesterday, so you haven't missed out on any great savings.
The Nikon Sportstar EX 8x25 binoculars Kimberley was using here aren't in the Black Friday sale, but if you're looking for a small and compact pair of binoculars for general-purpose viewing, we love the Nikon Prostaff P3 8x30, now just under $100, and the Celestron Outland 8x25, now under $55 — both discounted for Black Friday.
TELESCOPES PRICE UPDATE
We've checked the prices of the Black Friday telescope deals and they are all still the same as they were yesterday, so there's still time to save hundreds on your next telescope.
This 70mm travel scope from Celestron is great for getting a closer look at the moon and stars in dark sky sites without having to lug your bigger telescope around with you. It comes with a backpack and tripod, plus two eyepieces (10mm and 20mm). The eyepieces aren't amazing, but they'll do the job and are certainly good enough for beginners. This setup would also be a fantastic Christmas gift for your kids to get them interested in stargazing without breaking the bank — it's now just $79.89 at Amazon.
That's it from Kimberley on optics now, our health writer will be taking over for a bit to talk about the best health and fitness deals this Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday.
See you soon!
P.S. How much are we betting that she'll buy more stuff?
Hello! Our health writer, Anna Gora, is now taking the wheel. Let's talk about some cool health tech for a change, shall we? We promise you — this late Black Friday deal is worth your time.
The Molekule Air Pro is perhaps one of the most technologically advanced air purifiers you can buy right now. We tested it: it does what it says on the tin. It is a beast of performance, with excellent features to match. The Molekule Air Pro is a top choice if you want to keep your home free of pollutants AND want to know EXACTLY how the air quality in your home changes over time. It is a treat for science-loving people — but as it is with most high-tech gems, it is also prohibitively expensive.
Here comes the plot twist: Molekule Air Pro is now 38% off at Amazon, saving you $390. Its smaller sibling, the Molekule Air Mini+ is also on offer, with 38% discount. It does not get better than this so get this deal before it is gone.
Missed out on some cracking Black Friday discounts on Garmin fitness trackers? Do not worry. While some of the hottest deals around sold out within hours of going live, there is still time to save good money on these premium fitness watches. For example, the budget-friendly Garmin Forerunner 165 is now $50 off at Best Buy, bringing its price down to just $199.99.
Why this model in particular? The Garmin Forerunner 165 is a great entry-level watch for runners and budding athletes. It has everything you may ever need from a fitness tracker, but it is not overloaded with complex features or in-depth stats. It is relatively durable, but nowhere near as 'chunky' as some of the more premium models. And it looks good, too. Perfect choice for Garmin novices.
It's not just physical equipment you can save money on this Black Friday, there are plenty of great deals on photo editing software, too.
One of the best bits of software for astrophotographers, particularly if you take lots of calibration frames, is Affinity Photo 2. Kimberley reviewed it on our sister site Space.com and thought the Astrophotography Persona was amazing, making light work of adding and categorizing the calibration frames, and then automatically stacking them all together at the click of a button. There's no monthly subscription, either, you just pay $34.99 at Affinity (excl tax) and you own the software outright. The tablet version is also 50% off, great if you shoot and edit on the go — now $9.29. A bargain, if you ask us.
If you're a professional photographer and you want to shoot, edit and even tether on the go, you can save up to 30% on Capture One Pro software for Black Friday. This discount only applies to the subscription plans and not the lifetime license.
You can also get a massive 82% saving on Luminar Neo, now just $99 for a lifetime license. If you want speedy editing with the help of AI-based tools, this is a great choice at an amazing price.
DxO are also offering 50% off all their software (including upgrade prices), with their noise reduction technology being best-in-class, and was the top choice on the market until Lightroom introduced AI into their toolset.
Beginners and social media creators would get on well with CyberLink PhotoDirector, now offering 30% off their plans and licenses.
To address the elephant in the room, sadly there's no Black Friday discount from Adobe, which is disappointing. They're only offering any sort of discount when you purchase ALL of their Creative Cloud apps, only then will you get a 50% discount, but that's still $29.95 a month. You're better off just buying the Photography Plan at $19.99.
Bringing out the big guns now, these monstrous astronomy binoculars are fantastic for detailed views of the moon and stars — you can pick them up for $389 at Amazon thanks to this 22% saving, and the deal is still live as we head towards Cyber Monday.
Save $110 on the Celestron SkyMaster 25x100 binoculars at Amazon
The powerful 25x magnification coupled with the large 100mm objective lenses are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to stargazing and taking in the sights of the night sky. But you WILL need to mount them on a tripod. Not only due to their very heavy weight and large size but with such a strong magnification, any tiny knocks will give you an incredibly wobbly view. But hey, if you're here for Anna's fitness content, perhaps you'll be able to kill two birds with one stone here and use them as a dumbbell (though we wouldn't recommend it).
They come with a padded Celestron bag, but for the price, we'd have really liked to see some sort of decent hard case to protect them during transportation.
We rated them as one of the best binoculars for stargazing due to their specs alone, although we have yet to review them (they're on Kimberley's loooong list of optics she wants to review).
Aaaand we are briefly pivoting to fitness deals. Our health writer Anna Gora was talking about some great Garmin watch deals earlier today, but as she is keen to point out, there are plenty more offers worthy of landing on your radar. Like this little gem: the Garmin Venu 2 Sq is now $100 off at Walmart, which brings its price down to just $149.99. The same deal is also available on Amazon.
The Black Friday sale just keeps on giving, does it not? We tested the round version of this model, the Garmin Venu 2 Plus, and liked it so much that we gave it a 4.5/5 rating and included it in our guide to the best Garmin watches as the best option for daily use. This sleek fitness tracker is light, comfortable to wear and stylish enough to go well with your formal clothes — and that is not something we see often in Garmin watches.
Whether you are a passionate photographer, keen birdwatcher or budding space explorer, there is one thing that unites us all: a passion for good music. We can all broadly agree on one thing: good noise-canceling headphones are hard to find. Finding a good pair is even more difficult when dealing with tight budgets and sensitive ears. But, Black Friday deals come in handy here.
One of our favorite noise-canceling headphones, the Bose QuietComfort are STILL discounted by a hefty 43% at Amazon, saving you a round $150. They are immensely compact and ultra-comfortable to wear, but more importantly, they serve a really good sound quality, without background noises interrupting your favorite tunes. The cherry on top? The Bose QuietComfort are available in SIX color options. They may not be the best headphones money can buy, but for just $199, they are a steal. But hurry, this deal will not last long.
Howdy gang! 👋 Managing Editor, Jase Parnell-Brookes here tagging in for Anna Gora our resident Health writer!
After a beautiful morning walking the dog it's dawned on us (pun intended) that we must recommend some of our own optics gear, so first up: The Nikon Sportstar EX 8x25 compact binoculars.
We were using these very binoculars earlier this morning to bird spot. We currently have a fantastic flock of migratory Redwing and Fieldfare here which we managed to identify from about 1300 feet away. While they don't look like they're currently on offer at Amazon, the Nikon Sportstar EX 8x25 is almost the lowest price they've been all year and for a compact binocular for bird watching we can highly recommend them!
We really do recommend the Nikon Sportstar EX 8x25 binoculars for birdwatching. We know they’re not the highest magnification nor the largest objective lenses, but that’s the BEAUTY of these binos. They’re so compact and lightweight we can literally tuck them in our jacket pocket and walk.
They’re currently at nearly their joint-lowest price (okay, they’re 57 cents more expensive than on Monday Nov 24) and are a fantastic Christmas gift for the birdwatcher in your life (or nature spotter of any kind, really) and for under $100 we know they’ll love them.
Pictured above we were using this very pair to spy Eurasian Kingfishers buzzing along the coastal waters of Montenegro earlier this year.
As you can guess, as journalists we spend lots of time sitting down and writing (especially this weekend) so getting up and being active whilst also maintaining productivity is tricky. However, there is a remedy to this problem and it's the under desk treadmill.
We’ve just bought the Urevo under desk treadmill at its lowest-ever price (not pictured) for Black Friday / Cyber Monday and we can’t wait to get started. It’s 50% off at just $125! That, paired with a standing desk (this one’s also discounted) and you can work from home whilst getting your steps in.
👋 That’s Jase locked and loaded for a while, off to hunt more deals on the top cameras, optics, health and fitness gear we recommend based on our extensive, in-depth and hands-on reviews. 📸
Coming up… health and running guru Kate Carter will be dropping her favorite deep cuts as we move through this gorgeous Black Friday weekend. 💰
Hello, Kate here, recovering from the first track session in a very long time this morning. Fitness is not where it wants to be! But it means the deal-hunting today has definitely been influenced by sore muscles. Spotted just now - the brilliant percussive massager the Theragun is discounted by 20% at Amazon to $119.
If you've not used a massage gun before - yes, it is a little like a torture device, but one that does you a lot of good. Nothing beats it for getting rid of knots of muscles, whether it's in overworked hunched-over-computer shoulders or super tight calves. You can certainly get cheaper devices (here's another discounted one from OLsky for just $26.99) but it's an area where you tend to get what you pay for. More robust, top of the range models like the Theragun offer more power and therefore just work better.
In the market for a new pair of running shoes? (If you are a runner, the answer to that question is always yes!) Then race to our roundup of 10 of the best, all reduced for Black Friday. There's some really good bargains to be had, including a rare discount on Nike's super premium Alphafly racer - though curiously, the discount is only on the women's model.
But the bargain of the day has to be the Asics GT-1000. Now, it might not be the most glamorous of shoes, but if you are looking for something to see you through a season of training, that's durable, comfortable and will cushion your joints - well, you can't argue with $59 at Amazon. That is an incredible deal on a shoe that even at full price ($100) is fantastic value for money.
Right, off to spend some quality time with the Theragun now, over and out!
And that's a wrap! Black Friday has been and gone and so is this blog, going to... be gone... you know what we're trying to say. Don't despair! We have all your Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday deals needs fulfilled because we're continuing to track down the very cheapest, best price and lowest ever deals on all things cameras, telescopes, binoculars, fitness trackers, running shoes and more.
Like optics, health or fitness? Jump on to our Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals page for the most up-to-date content. And until Cyber Monday, Tarra in a bit!
