Bizarre moment as player scores rare 'own point' in GAA game

We all know that anything can happen on a GAA pitch. From wonder scores to mass brawls, anything and everything is possible.

But still, every once in a while, something happens that surprises even the most obsessive of GAA fans. And yesterday, that thing came in the form of an own point.

The bizarre moment, which saw a GAA player accidentally kick the ball over his own bar, happened yesterday at O'Moore Park in the Laois Senior football Championship semi-final between O'Dempsey's and Courtwood.

In the video below, we can see the events that led to the point being scored. The O'Dempsey's defender has been awarded a free-kick deep inside his own half and tries to play a crossfield ball to a teammate.

But, things go horribly wrong. The player ends up hitting the ball with the outside of his foot rather than the right side of his foot, which results in him slicing the ball.

The ball then goes towards the goal instead of going towards his teammate. The ball sails over the bar and a point is awarded to Courtwood much to the incredulity of the matchday commentators.

The score made it a five point game in O'Dempsey's favour. And while the unfortunate 'scorer' may have been left red faced at the time, the own point proved to be inconsequential as O'Dempsey's cruised into the final with an eight point victory.
