Birmingham Airport plane 'on fire' as passengers on Emirates A380 surrounded by fire crews

Part of a plane was 'on fire' at Birmingham Airport this afternoon, passengers onboard have claimed. A passenger shared picture of inside the Emirates A380 on the runway at Birmingham Airport this afternoon on Tuesday, July 4 as fire crews attended.

As reported by Birmingham Live, the airline's flagship jet only resumed its service at BHX on July 1 after it axed flights to Birmingham during the pandemic. One passenger described the plane being "surrounded by fire engines" as they landed on the tarmac at Birmingham Airport this afternoon.

It is understood hundreds of passengers were delayed as they remained on board while crews dealt with the incident. Sharing a picture from inside the plane, @harleenjabs said: "Amazing how this is happening, landing gear on fire. Surrounded by fire engines, flight from Dubai.

"Flight from Dubai landed with fire on landing gear plane being towed." A spokesperson for Birmingham Airport said: "There was a problem with the brakes on the A380. It looks dramatic but passengers on board were safe at all times albeit inconvenienced. It's now moved."

Emirates first launched the service to Birmingham in 2016, to Nice in 2017 and Glasgow in 2019. Emirates is the largest operator of Airbus A380, with more than 80 aircraft currently in active service, serving more than 40 destinations worldwide. Emirates and West Midlands Fire Service have been contacted for comment.
