Birkenhead Tunnel closed in both directions due to police incident

Police have closed the Birkenhead Tunnel due to an ongoing incident.

The Queensway Tunnel was closed at around 8.35am today and is still currently closed in both directions. Merseytravel tweeted today that all inbound and outbound cross river bus services will be diverted via the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel.

A spokesperson for Merseytravel said: "Due to a police incident the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel is currently closed in both directions. All inbound and outbound Cross River Bus Services will be diverted via the Kingsway(Wallasey) Tunnel."

One picture of the scene shows around five police vehicles including two incident welfare unit vans at the entrance of the tunnel on the Liverpool side. A force incident manager for Merseyside Police told the ECHO the incident is understood to be a "concern for welfare" of a man.

Traffic management system Inrix also said: "Queensway Birkenhead Tunnel out of town closed due to police incident between Liverpool and Birkenhead."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police: "We can confirm that police are in attendance at the Birkenhead (Queensway) tunnel this morning, Saturday, May 7.

"At around 8.35am we received a report of a concern for safety of a man at the entrance to the tunnel in Liverpool. The Queensway tunnel is closed in both directions while emergency services deal with the incident.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take an alternative route."
