Bipartisan Task Force Investigates Security Failures In Trump Assassination Attempt

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., speaks with reporters to discuss his proposal of sending crucial bipartisan support to aid Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan after weeks of inaction, at the Capitol

A bipartisan congressional task force has been established to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The group promises to thoroughly examine the security failures of the day, despite acknowledging that it may be a slow process.

The lawmakers, accompanied by local law enforcement officials, recently toured the Pennsylvania rally site where the shooting took place. They visited the area where Trump was shot at during the July 13 rally and climbed onto the roof where the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired from.

Task force Chairman Mike Kelly emphasized the importance of getting to the truth, stating that jumping to conclusions would not serve the investigation well. The bipartisan task force, consisting of six Democrats and seven Republicans, was approved by the House in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote.

While some lawmakers have called for swift accountability, Kelly cautioned against rushing to judgment and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. The task force aims to determine who was ultimately responsible for the security failures, including examining the role of Trump's security staff in the campaign.

The group has until mid-December to issue a final report and recommendations. Ranking member Jason Crow highlighted the bipartisan nature of the task force and stressed the importance of condemning political violence.

Separately, a group of conservative congressmen held a counterprogramming event in Washington, DC, to discuss their own efforts to investigate the assassination attempt. Despite not being affiliated with the task force, they expressed a commitment to accountability and transparency in government.

Overall, the bipartisan task force is dedicated to conducting a full and thorough investigation into the attempted assassination, with a focus on uncovering the truth behind the security failures that occurred that day.
