'BinBag' scheme launched to protect city centre waste from rabid seagulls

A new 'BinBag' scheme aims to stop seagulls ripping open refuse bags and throwing rubbish all over city centre streets.

Collapsible bins will be handed out to businesses which will protect the waste instead of it being left in refuse sacks on the side of the street.

The project will be rolled out on a phased basis, starting on streets on the southside of the city with high footfall. It had previously been successfully trialled for six months and "refined to create as robust a solution as possible", a Dublin City Council spokesperson said.

"The aim is to remove the current unsatisfactory situation with waste bags presented on high footfall streets. This service is being introduced on a phased basis to all customers who are currently presenting plastic waste bags in Dublin City."

Phase 1 is being introduced to the following streets:

  • Grafton Street
  • South William Street
  • Exchequer Street
  • Drury Street
  • Castlemarket Street

This initiative will be reviewed on an ongoing basis by the City Council, DublinTown and waste collection companies.
