Billy Gilmour namechecked by Roberto De Zerbi as Brighton star showed 'quality' vs Manchester United

Billy Gilmour was once again praised for his 'quality' as Brighton defeated Manchester United.

The match was settled deep into added-time at the end of the game as Alexis Mac Allister slotted home from 12-yards to land all three points for the Seagulls and keep their hopes of playing European football next season alive and kicking.

Roberto De Zerbi handed former Rangers and Chelsea kid Gilmour a rare English Premier League run out in the thumping 6-0 win over Wolves and he kept faith with the Scotland international, and was rewarded with another top performance. He reserved special praise for the midfielder alongside Moises Caicedo with both landing top marks.

Asked about Caicedo’s role in defence, De Zerbi told the Brighton website : “We have reached a level with the right players in the right positions and I didn’t want to change.

“Caicedo is a top, top player who can play anywhere and [Billy] Gilmour deserved to play after his performance against Wolverhampton, he was fantastic. They both showed their quality.”

That win means Brighton have recorded a league double over United this season and handed them revenge on the recent FA Cup semi-final defeat on penalties to Erik ten Hag's men.

He added: “We deserved to win today and in the semi-final. If you play well there might be one time when you can lose but most of the time, from my experience in football, you win.

“We played well and had a lot of chances but the clean sheet was also important.”
