Billy Gilmour and Brighton create history as they qualify for Europe for the first time

Billy Gilmour helped Brighton create history as they officially qualified for Europe for the FIRST time.

The former Rangers kid made the move to the Seagulls under Graham Potter earlier this season but just weeks later he departed for Chelsea. Roberto De Zerbi arrived at the Amex and the Scotland international found game-time very hard to come by. But a rare chance to impress came against Wolves and he landed huge praise from his club boss in the demolition job.

That form earned him further starts against Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle in what has been a major boost for both the player himself and Scotland boss Steve Clarke with big Euro 2024 qualifiers against Norway and Georgia on the horizon. The 21-year-old had tongues wagging online after his stunning assist at St James' Park.

He was brought on in the final moments of yesterday's 3-1 success over Southampton that all but secured Europa League football for Brighton next season barring a 16 goal swing in the final two games of the season. Should that happen they would finish seventh and secure Europa Conference League but it is highly likely they will end the campaign sixth and in Europe's second tier competition.

Speaking after yesterday's win, De Zerbi told Brighton's website: "We don’t need to too many players but my idea is to compete in four competitions – hopefully the Europa League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

“It will be tougher for sure, and I think we might lose some big players who deserve to go for other targets in other teams.

"But we will bring in other big players and arrive ready to compete in four competitions. We will play to win, to show our quality and our style in every competition and we can’t lose our DNA. In Europe if we play against big teams we won’t forget our style.”

He added: “It’s an honour to work here. I have never thought to go back to Italy or another Premier League team.

"I want to stay, I am enjoying working with these players and the people inside the club a lot.”
