Bill Simmons criticizes Spurs for not offering Austin Reaves a max contract

Bill Simmons has been a talented and popular writer for years, and he has a pretty sizable following. However, there’s one slight problem with him: He’s a Boston Celtics homer, which means he hates the Los Angeles Lakers.

He isn’t shy about bashing the Lakers and rooting for them to fail, and he doesn’t try to hide such sentiments either.

On Sunday, Lakers guard Austin Reaves had a fantastic performance in Team USA’s final exhibition game before the official start of the FIBA World Cup. That morning, Simmons took to social media and gave the San Antonio Spurs grief for not offering Reaves a max contract in free agency this summer.

It was widely expected the Spurs would make Reaves a big offer, forcing the Lakers to dig deep into their piggy bank to match that offer and keep the undrafted standout. Reportedly, San Antonio wanted to offer Reaves $21 million a year, but it was scared because it was clear L.A. intended to match any offer made to him.

Instead, he stayed with the Lakers on a new four-year deal worth nearly $54 million. It could end up being a bargain if Reaves continues to improve as a player the way he did this past season.
