Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently ran a poll to find out people’s perceptions of the requisites for getting a job.What Happened: Gates, who has now plunged headlong into healthcare and fight against climate change, asked his 62.8 million Twitter followers in a poll, by 2025, how many jobs in the U.S. would require some education beyond high school.
The results of the poll, which received responses from 33,563 people, showed that about 38.5% of the respondents thought about two-thirds of jobs would require education after high school.
The proportion of people who said about a quarter of the jobs may need a college degree was 28.5%
Laying The ‘Paths:’ Gates shared an article from his blog post titled ‘Gates Notes’ in which he talked about Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California, a community college, streamlining the journey of students from high school to higher education to the workforce.
The word pathways are used in “discussions about the journey from high school to higher education to a fulfilling career—a journey that, for many Black and Latino students and those from low-income backgrounds, is often anything but smooth,” he said.
Gates Foundation is focused on ensuring that the students have “paths to follow — and finish — from classroom to commencement to a career that aligns with their interests, and to feel supported at every step along the way,” the tech entrepreneur said. This necessitates addressing transition points in the educational journey that often turns into obstructions, he added.
By 2025, about two-thirds of jobs in the U.S. would require some education beyond high school, Gates said. The pandemic led many students to put off post-secondary education, he noted.
The billionaire also referred to data that showed that people who don’t start college within two years of getting their high school diplomas are less likely to pursue postsecondary education.
“So the best way to get people graduating from college, so they can get the best jobs for themselves and make the most out of their careers, is to reach them early and ensure they have what they need to stay on the path.
