Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, were seen together at an A-list event in New York City last week, despite their separation last summer. The couple, who still live together and have an open relationship, attended 'A Celebration of Life' for Harry Belafonte at Riverside Church. Guests noted that they appeared to be in good spirits, taking photos and chatting with others in attendance.
McCray, in a previous statement, mentioned that despite their split, she and de Blasio are still very much in love and that the decision to separate was mutual. This public appearance together comes after de Blasio was recently seen dating other women, including one who was still married at the time.
The event also saw the presence of political figures like Bernie Sanders and his wife, Jane, along with celebrities such as Gayle King, Angela Davis, Wynton Marsalis, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Spike Lee with his wife Tonya Lewis. The celebration included speeches from Rev. Adriene Thorne and Rev. Dr. James Forbes, as well as a performance by Aloe Blacc with the Harlem Choir.
Spike Lee shared anecdotes about his interactions with Belafonte, including how the legendary activist and entertainer had teased him about casting choices. Lee eventually cast Belafonte in his film 'BlacKkKlansman' and received a signed poster from Belafonte, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity.
The event concluded with a performance by Wynton Marsalis and his New Orleans band, marking what would have been Belafonte's 97th birthday. The celebration honored the life and legacy of the late civil rights icon, who passed away last year at the age of 96.
