Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick providing draft analysis on ESPN might seem very strange, but he was the guest of honor on The Pat McAfee Show‘s 2024 NFL Draft coverage on Thursday night.
Belichick provided his insight into each of the first-round picks, which, oh yes, included his old team taking North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the third pick.
When asked about New England’s new quarterback, Belichick gave a predictably droll answer before pivoting with a smirk to how Maye compared himself to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
In a nice moment of snarkiness, Belichick joked that that’s a lofty comparison for Maye to make for himself.

However, Belichick still gave Maye some of his flowers for what he does well on the field while also providing some very fair critiques for what the quarterback can improve on.

He can really drive the ball and he's a freak athlete" ~ Bill Belichick #PMSDraftSpectacular https://t.co/wJHIM1vS9Q pic.twitter.com/RvmUZpXDra

Funny enough, Belichick was pretty harsh on Maye’s footwork right before he was picked.

Look, Belichick is one of the greatest competitors in coaching history, so it’d make sense for him to be just a bit salty about his former team drafting a quarterback the same year he left the franchise.
However, Belichick did his best to grit it out and talk about the future of New England without him, and it’s hard to fault him for at least getting in a little sass for the fun of it.
