Bill and Ted on Broadway: Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter to reunite in a most excellent Waiting for Godot

In most outstanding news, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter – the stars of three Bill and Ted movies – are to reunite on Broadway for one of the 20th century’s theatrical masterpieces: Waiting for Godot.

The story initially had many checking the date in case it was April 1, but it has been confirmed that Hollywood megastar Reeves, known for films such as the John Wick and The Matrix series, will play Estragon. This will be his Broadway debut.

He has been firm friends with Winter since they filmed Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, about two bumbling teens who go back in time so they can pass their history test, some 35 years ago. Winter, who appeared on Broadway as a child in 1979, will play Vladimir.

In a joint statement, Reeves and Winter said, “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.”

The show will open in the autumn of 2025 in an as-yet-unnamed Broadway theatre. It will be overseen by star director Jamie Lloyd, whose recent productions in London include Romeo and Juliet with Tom Holland and Sunset Boulevard with Nicole Scherzinger.

“It is a real honor to be collaborating with the brilliant Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter on Samuel Beckett’s sublime masterpiece — one of the greatest plays of all time,” Lloyd said.

A year before that production lands on Broadway, there is a starry revival on this side of the Atlantic. Ben Whishaw and Lucien Msmati will be the pair waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from September.

The Bill and Ted series is much loved, with numerous quotable lines from the dunderheaded duo from “party on, dudes” to “be excellent to each other”. They most recently returned in 2020 with Bill and Ted Face the Music
