Bilbao boss blasts 'incomprehensible' schedule before Rangers Europa League tie

Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has lashed out at Spanish football chiefs because of their hectic schedule ahead of their Europa League showdown with Rangers.

Rangers face the Spanish side in the quarter-final of the competition after knocking out Fenerbahce in the Round of 16.

The first leg will be at Ibrox before Rangers take the daunting trip to the Basque region for the return leg next month.

But former Barcelona boss Valverde is far from happy at the scheduling of their La Liga game before the travel to Scotland.

They have discovered they will face Villarreal in a 9pm local kick off time on the Sunday night before they play Rangers on Thursday, 10 April.

And that's outraged Valverde, who is on his third spell of managing Athletic.

He said: "This scheduling hurts us.

"We are playing Villarreal late on Sunday night away and that means they have taken away a day's rest for us before the first leg with Rangers.

"It's actually incomprehensible what they do because it's beneficial for Spanish football for teams to progress through the rounds.

"I know Real Mardid have complained about this and it happens to us on a regular basis."
