It has not been confirmed if the casualty was taken to hospital via an air ambulance that a driver had seen at the scene.

A Mersey Gateway bridge social media account tweeted at 3.06pm that the “southbound slip road” towards junction 12 of the M56 had been shut due to a collision, adding at 3.08pm the northbound had also shut.

Both sides of the dual carriageway were clear when the ECHO visited the scene at around shortly after 4pm.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Police have attended a report that one vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision on the Rocksavage Expressway in Runcorn.

“Police attended with North West Ambulance Service and the road was closed to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident.

“One person has been taken to hospital for further treatment.

“The road has now been opened.”
