The casualty, from Merseyside, was taken to hospital by road ambulance.

National Highways and police shut the carriageway to deal with the incident, leaving drivers facing delays of an hour and six miles of congestion.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “On arrival, officers discovered that no other vehicles were involved in the incident and the motorbike rider had sustained a serious leg injury.

“The 32-year-old man from Merseyside was subsequently taken to hospital in an ambulance. No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: “An ambulance and helicopter were deployed to the scene of an RTC involving a motorbike.

“A man in his 30s was taken to hospital by road.”
