Biker dies after crashing into lamppost moments after police asked him to stop

A biker has died after crashing into a lamppost just moments after police tried to pull him over. The man was riding a Kawasaki motorbike when he was signalled to stop by officers near HM Prison Leicester in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The rider, who was in his 20s, then collided with the post and was left seriously injured. He was rushed to the Leicester Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.

Police have confirmed they have referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), in line with standard practice. An investigation into the crash is also ongoing, Leicestershire Live reports.

Officers closed Infirmary Road, Aylestone Road and Welford Road and traffic was diverted while they dealt with the aftermath of the collision.

Traffic was diverted away from the area as officers from the force's serious collision unit began their initial investigation.

Detective Sergeant Jon Putnam, from the unit, said: "Our enquiries are very much in their early stages and I would ask anyone who was in the area of Aylestone Road earlier this morning to come forward.

"I'd like to speak to anyone with dashcam footage, who saw the collision occur or saw the motorcycle beforehand. Anything you're able to provide could help."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police by visiting the police website or calling 101 and quoting incident 48 of 27 April.
