Biker crashes into wall and left seriously injured after five-strong motorbike gang ambush him at Leeds petrol station

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he crashed his motorcycle while attempting to flee from a gang of five in Lowtown last night.

The victim, 29, was ambushed at an Esso Petrol station around 9.16pm by a group of five men, forcing him to flee. However, as the victim tried to turn into Intake Road he lost control and collided with a wall.

West Yorkshire Police say they initially attended to the scene under the impression it was a road traffic accident, but quickly established that there had been an attempted robbery. The collision with the wall, which happened at the junction of Swinnow Road and Intake Road in the Pudsey area, left the rider with serious injuries.

Police say the group fled the scene and one of them abandoned a motorbike they had used in the attempted robbery in Lowtown. The victim's injuries are serious but not life threatening.

Police are appealing to the public for help in tracing or identifying the suspects. A statement released by West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are appealing for information after a man was left seriously injured following an attempted motorbike robbery in Leeds. At 9:16pm last night, officers were called to what initially appeared to be a road traffic collision involving a motorcycle at the junction of Swinnow Road and Intake Road, in Pudsey.

"It was established to have been an attempted robbery where five males on three motorbikes had approached the 29-year-old victim at the nearby Esso petrol station, in Lowtown, and tried to steal his motorbike. In fear, the victim sped off pursued by the suspects and lost control as he turned into Intake Road, colliding with a wall.

"He was taken to hospital by ambulance and is continuing to receive treatment for serious injuries that are not considered life threatening. The suspects abandoned one of the motorbikes they were riding nearby in Lowtown.

"Officers from Leeds District Crime Team are continuing to carry out extensive enquiries to identify the suspects and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any part of the incident, particularly anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage. Anyone with information is asked to contact Leeds DCT via 101 quoting crime reference 13220391860 or online via www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat."
