North Carolina hires Bill Belichick as head football coach

Bill Belichick is going from the AFC East to the ACC.

The former head coach of the New England Patriots became the head football coach at the University of North Carolina on Wednesday,

Belichick’s father, Steve was an assistant coach at North Carolina in the 1950s so there is family history there.

Belichick has eight Super Bowl rings, six with New England and two as an assistant with the New York Giants.

At 72, he replaces the 73-year-old Mack Brown who was fired on Nov. 26.

Belichick is 14 wins behind Don Shula for the most in NFL history *333, 347) but that goal will wait as he chases an ACC Championship — the Tar Heels have not won one since 1980 — and CFP national championship.

One can be certain Name, Image and Likeness money and deals when it comes to recruiting players to the Tar Heels will play a huge factor.

“If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” Belichick said on ESPN this week “It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching and techniques that would transfer to the NFL.”

To that end, Belichick is bringing Michael Lombardi to Chapel Hill.

“I’m excited to join Coach Belichick at North Carolina,” Lombardi said. “Although leaving my VSIN family will be hard, I’m excited to return to helping build a winning program. I’m forever thankful for all the great people at VSIN, especially Bill Adee and the Musburger family.”
