Patna: A portion of an under construction Agwani-Sultanganj bridge being constructed over the Ganga River with an investment of Rs 1710 crore collapsed for the third time on Saturday.
Increase in water level
The incident occurred following an increase in the water level of the Ganga River, which mounted huge pressure on the pillars of the under-construction bridge connecting Agwani Ghat with Sultanganj. No casualty was reported when the bridge collapsed on Saturday morning.
Work hampered
The portion of the bridge between pillar numbers 9 and 10 over the Ganga between Agwani and Sultanganj collapsed. The work was hampered in the last month due to the rising water level.
District Magistrate of Khagaria Amit Kumar Pandey said that the Agwani-Sultanganj bridge collapsed on Saturday morning.
Technical fault
"Entire structure of the under-construction bridge, which has a technical fault, is supposed to be dismantled by the contractor. The construction work has already been stopped there. The contractor is dismantling the structure on directive from Patna High Court," he added.
Collapsed third time
The Agwani Sultanganj four-lane bridge has collapsed for the third time. Earlier, on April 30, 2022, pillar number five had collapsed. In May last year, the superstructure of pillar numbers 9–12 on the Agwani end collapsed. The construction of the bridge began in 2015. (with Agency inputs)
