Bihar: Daunting task for universities to regularise academic sessions

PATNA: Even though the chancellor as well as the state education department has directed the universities to regularise academic sessions by clearing the backlog of examinations and ensuring timely publication of results, academics are sceptical about any immediate improvement in the situation.

At a recent meeting of registrars and examination controllers of the universities held on the directive of governor-cum-chancellor Phagu Chauhan, the universities were directed to hold all the examinations on time and publish the results soon thereafter. They were also directed to distribute certificates and mark sheets to the students as soon as possible after the examinations so that students do not face any difficulty in applying for competitive examinations. The original degrees must also be made available online to the students within two months of the publication of results, they were told.

Just a week ago, at a review meeting of Patliputra University, education minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary also directed the universities to clear the backlog of examinations and bring back academic sessions on the right track before the commencement of the next academic session (2023-24).

Academics are, however, sceptical about the implementation of the challenging task of completing the examinations of two to three sessions in less than a year's time.

Federation of University Teachers' Associations of Bihar working president K B Sinha said the directives issued from the chancellor's office or the state education department for regularising teaching and examinations hold little significance due to acute scarcity of teachers and non-teaching staff in almost all the institutions of higher education.
