Traffic was at a standstill on William Hovell Drive near the junction with John Gorton Drive after four or five cars shunted into each other.
The crashes happened on the westbound carriageway, according to an eye witness.
A fire truck was at the scene and an attempt was being made at 6 o'clock to clear the cars off the road to let Friday evening rush-hour traffic to go on its way.
The road was cleared by 7.20pm.
