'Big thing for me'- Jordan Henderson explains Mason Mount gesture after Liverpool's FA Cup final win

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has explained why he went over to comfort Chelsea's Mason Mount after the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The match at Wembley played out in similar fashion to the Carabao Cup final back in February, which saw the Reds beat the London club on penalties to secure the trophy. This time around, it was Mason Mount that missed a decisive spot-kick for Chelsea, before defender Kostas Tsimikas sent the Liverpool end into absolute bedlam with the winning penalty.

Amid the wild celebrations from the Liverpool players, Henderson could be seen giving some words of encouragement to Mount, as the two players also represent England at international level.

"That is always a big thing for me," the Liverpool midfielder said in an interview with Sky Sports. "You've got to be respectful to the opponent, especially with players you play with from your national team.

"You know how good they are and that they are good people, especially in penalty shootouts, it's never nice for people to miss penalties. I knew he'd be feeling really down and to be honest, he probably didn't want me going over there thinking back, but I just wanted to give him a little bit of support because he's a top player, a great lad and he's still very young.

"He's got the world at his feet and I'm sure he'll bounce back, and when he gets the opportunity again, he'll step up and put the ball in the back of the net."

Sadio Mane did something similar as he too headed straight for Edouard Mendy after Tsimikas' penalty rippled the back of the net. The pair represent Senegal and it's no surprise the Chelsea goalkeeper was able to deny Mane earlier in the shootout given how well they know each other.
