The Big Ten Conference has imposed a $100,000 fine on both the University of Michigan and Ohio State University for their involvement in a postgame brawl that occurred after the Michigan-Ohio State football game on November 30, 2024. The conference cited a violation of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy as the reason for the fines.

Following Michigan's narrow 13-10 victory over Ohio State, tensions escalated when a Wolverines player attempted to plant a Michigan banner on the Buckeyes logo at midfield in Ohio Stadium. This action sparked a physical altercation, with pushing, shoving, and eventually punches being thrown by members of both teams. Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer was observed snatching the flag and discarding it.

The situation spiraled out of control, requiring several minutes for stadium security and police to intervene and separate the two teams. Pepper spray was reportedly deployed to quell the disturbance, causing players to experience discomfort with symptoms such as eye irritation and coughing.

Despite the severity of the altercation, the Big Ten confirmed that no additional fines or suspensions would be issued beyond the initial penalties imposed on Michigan and Ohio State.

Michigan running back Kalel Mullings condemned the postgame violence, labeling it as detrimental to the sport and college football as a whole. He emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and respect, especially in defeat.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day acknowledged the chaotic nature of the incident and defended his players' actions in response to the flag-planting attempt. Day expressed regret over the loss but underscored the team's determination to protect their home field.

In conclusion, the aftermath of the Michigan-Ohio State game serves as a stark reminder of the significance of sportsmanship and restraint in competitive athletics. The Big Ten Conference's swift action in penalizing both universities underscores the commitment to upholding standards of conduct and fair play in collegiate sports.
