Big Story Hunt at Eldon Square invites families to find 1,000 free books

There will 1,000 free books up for grabs in Newcastle this weekend during a huge giveaway event.

In celebration of World Book Day - which takes place on Thursday - Eldon Square will be following up on Saturday with The Big Story Hunt. And families are being invited to join in the fun from 10am and seek out the children's books which will be hidden throughout the centre.

The event, which will run on March 4 until 3pm, sees Eldon Square again team up with the National Literacy Trust on the initiative aimed at getting children excited about reading. It follows the success of its similar partnership in the city last year which saw families hunting throughout the venue in a bid to to track down the giveaways.

There will be clues on social media to help them with Saturday's search and it says: "Find a book and it’s yours to take home." And families are asked tag @EldonSqNCL and @ReadNorthEast in a post when they make a discovery.

The range of available books will be aimed at all ages up to 12 and, if the one found does not appeal - or has already been read - families will be able to take it to a special Read North East stand in Eldon Square and swap it for one that does. Read North East is a National Literacy Trust campaign to raise local literacy levels and encourage parents to play, chat and read to their babies and children.

Its stand will be set up in St Andrew’s Way and will be open until 4pm on the day. It also will have a supply of free books to give away - one per child - while stocks last.

Following the hunt, it is hoped that families will pass on the book they have found - once it has been read - to somebody else to enjoy, in keeping with World Book Day's aim of celebrating books and encouraging a love of reading.
