Big Splash Newport: Everything you need to know including street and car park closures

Newport's Big Splash is set to return this weekend for its first event in two years. The free festival returns on Saturday July 23 and Sunday July 24 featuring a range of music, street entertainment, workshops and arts and crafts across different venues in the city.

The event, run by Newport Live and the Riverfront, will see the Riverfront Theatre transformed into a family hub Splashtonbury complete with the Flying start under fives' zone, circus skills workshops, a baby rave, poetry workshop and arts and crafts.

There will be performances from Newport and Wales musicians including Araby, Tobias Robertson, Niques, Wahanda Placide and Codewalkers, as well as other performances from community groups, a crafts workshop in a bus donated by Newport Transport, sports activities and pop-up performances on Commercial Street, John Frost Square and other parts of the city.

You'll find more performance spaces and an information point at Friars Walk, while Big Splash After Dark will close the festival on Sunday night with performances outside Le Pub.

There will be a number of street and car park closures as a result of the event. Newport City Council has confirmed the following streets will be closed over the weekend:

  • Charles Street junction of School Lane
  • Commercial Street between Stow Hill and Hill Street
  • Corn Street junction of Skinner Lane

As well as that, Newport Live said the Riverfront Theatre pay and display car park is closed from 8pm on Thursday, July 21 until the end of Sunday. Car parks at Friars Walk, Kingsway Centre and other city car parks remain open as usual.

"Commercial and High street, which are already pedestrianised, will have elements of closure throughout the weekend to ensure minimal impact on both businesses and shoppers as we prepare to welcome thousands of people to the city, and ensure we can support set up ahead of the 11am start," a Newport Live spokesperson said.

"The team have received fantastic support for the festival which we're delighted to see return tomorrow."
