Big contract call awaits after Dogs rule out Galvin bid

Canterbury are still yet to lock down off-contract halfback Toby Sexton after the NRL ladder leaders ruled themselves out of entering a Lachlan Galvin bidding war.

Sexton has played every game for the Bulldogs in their 6-0 start, guiding Cameron Ciraldo's side through the early part of the year without five-eighth partner Matt Burton.

Canterbury were widely touted as a landing spot for teenage Wests Tigers star Galvin before Bulldogs football manager Phil Gould said on Monday they would not make a play for the five-eighth, who can talk to rival clubs from November 1.

"Good players come on the market and you always have to have those conversations and look at what's best for the club," Ciraldo said.

"We can't talk to him for another seven months anyway, and I thought Gus shut down all the speculation and we'll get on with what we're doing.

"At the moment we've got our plan and we're sticking to that.

"It's been working really well for us, the guys in those positions at the moment are doing a great job, and we've got a pathways system that we've put a lot of time and effort into, and that's reaping some rewards as well."

That would be reassuring for Sexton were it not for the fact the playmaker has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract.

Ciraldo said on Tuesday he was not aware of any progress on the contract status of Sexton, who solidified his place as the club's halfback midway through last year.

"He's done really well, but there's some areas in his game that we want to see him improve as well, and he's really well aware of that," Ciraldo said.

"He has handled this whole period really well. It was the same last year when he wasn't in the team, he was so team first.

"While he is doing that and improving every week, then those other things will come."

Ciraldo's side face Brisbane on Thursday night with a chance to extend their winning start to the season to 7-0 for the first time in club history.

Prop Jack Todd (broken arm) is the only change to the side which thrashed South Sydney on Good Friday, with Harry Hayes taking his spot on the interchange.
