Big card shop to shut another store with more branches to close for good in days

Clintons card shop is set to shut another store within days with a string of closures still yet to come.

The much loved retailer, which has been a key player on Britain's high street since 1968, is expected to close another store forever in just a few weeks' time.

Staff will close the Kirkcaldy shopping centre branch for good on April 8, according to Fife Today.

It follows another closure announcement for the Clintons store in King Street in Whitehaven on March 19, which is also Mother's Day in the UK.

Other branches set to close this month include Market Street in Bolton and Whitehaven in Cumbria.

The reason for the closures has not been confirmed by Clintons and the future of the staff who work in the affected stores is also uncertain.

Clintons was founded in 1968 as a family run business with its first store opening in Epping, Essex (PA)

Last year, Clintons permanently closed three of its shops in Ayr, Dorchester and Market Harborough.

The Dorchester branch closed on December 29, followed by its Ayre site in April and its Market Harborough store in January 2022.

Recent times have seen Clintons, as well as many high street retailers, face mounting cash flow pressures amid challenging trading conditions.

Back in 2019, the company announced it needed to urgently close 66 of its branches to avoid falling into administration.

However, the firm was saved by a company called Esquire Retail Limited by entering into a pre-pack administration deal in December of that year.

Despite being given a new lease of life, Clintons did have to lay off some staff and close several stores.

At this time, the card retailer had 334 stores and 2,500 staff compared to 238 stores and around 2,000 employees in January 2022.

According to Clintons' website, there are currently 225 stores across the UK.

It marks yet another blow to Britain's declining high street over the last few years.

Other retailers have been feeling the pinch, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic with shoppers tightening their belts to combat high inflation and the rising cost of living.

More high street names are expected to announce closures over the next year.

The Mirror has contacted Clintons for comment.
