The Big 12 Championship scenarios are the most complicated and involve the most teams of any Power Four conference in college football.

In the tangled web of the Big 12, chaos reigns supreme. Entering Week 14, the conference finds itself with the most intricate tiebreakers of any Power 4 league. Nine teams remain in contention for a spot in the championship game, with four—Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, and Iowa State—locked at 6-2 atop the standings. Five more teams sit just behind at 5-3, clinging to hope as they rely on victories and the stumble of at least three of the leaders to stay alive.

No team controls its own destiny. It’s a maze of possibilities, with the Big 12 acknowledging a staggering 256 potential scenarios in the event of an eight-way tie. In a season where every game has carried enormous weight, the road to Arlington has never felt more uncertain—or thrilling.

Big 12 Championship Tie-Breaking Scenarios

The Big 12, already known for its unpredictability, has delivered one of the wildest finishes in college football history. With just one week remaining, a four-way tie at the top—featuring Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, and Iowa State, all sitting at 6-2—has created a tiebreaker maze unlike any other.

The simplest outcome? The two teams that reach 7-2 will advance to the championship game. But nothing about this season has been simple. If all four top teams win, Arizona State and Iowa State are the likely finalists, based on common opponents. Yet, as the Big 12 office ominously notes, “there are scenarios” where even they could be left out.

The possibilities are staggering. In one three-way tie featuring Colorado, Iowa State, and Arizona State, a Texas Tech victory over West Virginia could send Colorado to the title game. However, whether Iowa State or Arizona State joins them depends on a web of common-opponent records.

And then there’s the chaos of a full collapse—if all four top teams lose. That opens the door to a six-, seven-, or even an eight-way tie at 6-3, where teams like Baylor and Texas Tech emerge as unlikely beneficiaries.

The Big 12 has confirmed 256 scenarios for an eight-way tie. In this conference, madness isn’t a surprise—it’s tradition.
