Biden's Immigration Policies Costing Cities Billions, Critics Say

President Biden initially proposed immigration reforms, rarely mentioned thereafter.

The US administration is apparently facing severe criticisms due to its immigration policies. When President Biden first took office, he proposed fixes to the immigration system but, as critics argue, his constant invitations to asylum seekers seems to provide a different narrative. The overwhelming migration has not only affected the American public but has also negatively impacted communities and cities across the nation.

In California, the cost of the influx of immigrants to the locals is approximately $22 billion. Likewise, New York City estimates a burden of $4.3 billion by July of 2024. In Chicago, Illinois, residents have voiced concerns about resources being diverted from community services towards the management of illegal immigration. The housing shortage in the US made worse by the upsurge in the immigrant population and the need for increased law enforcement raises concerns about public safety. Critics argue that it is not a lack of compassion, but one of organization and lack of a proper border management system that is contributing to the crisis.

The effects are not only about economics, but they are also about national security, public health, public safety, and diplomatic relationships too. The President proposed an investment of $14 billion in border security, which includes the hiring of thousands of agents to process migrants and asylum seekers. However, the proposal has yet to receive full backing from Congress.

The concept of a 'high-tech' border was highly promoted during President Biden's election campaign. As envisioned, it didn't necessarily involve a physical border wall. Instead, it was supposed to be a technologically advanced system to manage migration. However, this idea does not seem to be in fruition yet. Critics argue that when measures for advancing border management were proposed, including technocratic solutions, increased funding, and improving the number of judges, they were met with opposition.

With the current scenario, the public perception appears to be negatively influenced due to the administration's handling of the situation. It remains a challenge to see how the situation will be effectively handled to ensure public safety, economic stability, national security, and a peaceful resolution to the migration issue.
